Why older adults are turning to cannabis edibles

Published on:

A new study by researchers from University of Utah Health and University of Colorado Boulder found that many older adults turn to cannabis as a more effective or non-pharmaceutical option for managing sleep problems, chronic pain, and mental health concerns.

Published in JAMA Network Open, the study revealed that most older adults rely on recommendations from friends, family, or personal experiences rather than guidance from healthcare providers when choosing cannabis products.

Researchers also found that many participants viewed CBD products as therapeutic, while THC products were often associated with mood improvement. However, combination products containing both CBD and THC were the most preferred, as users believed they offered balanced benefits.

The findings highlight the need for better patient education and stronger communication between healthcare providers and older adults to support informed decision-making about cannabis use.
