UT Center on Aging and Population Sciences Secures 6-Year Grant Renewal to Advance Research and Expand Training Programs

Published on: Jan 29, 2026

The Center on Aging and Population Sciences (CAPS) at The University of Texas at Austin has secured a competitive six-year renewal of its P30 Center Grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health. The renewal reinforces CAPS’ standing as a national leader in aging and population health research.

One of only 15 NIA-funded Centers on the Demography and Economics of Aging in the United States, CAPS is recognized for its significant scientific contributions and national prominence. The Center has produced high-impact research spanning longitudinal studies on child loss and dementia risk, innovative daily-life investigations into older adults’ social experiences, foundational work on how genetic and environmental factors jointly influence cognitive aging and dementia, and clinical research addressing depression and suicide risk in later life. Together, these efforts directly inform strategies to improve health and well-being across aging populations.

CAPS also extends its impact through partnerships across Texas, including scientific collaboration with the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas. With more than 400,000 Texans living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, these joint efforts focus on identifying prevention strategies and improving care for the state’s rapidly growing older population.

Bringing together an interdisciplinary network of scholars from UT Austin and partner institutions, CAPS investigates key areas such as cognitive aging and dementia, family and social relationships, caregiving, economic security, and population trends in health and longevity. By integrating innovative data, methods, and theory, the Center aims to advance understanding and improve the health of aging populations in Texas, across the United States, and globally.
