Understanding the Role of Muscle Health in the Aging Process

The field of muscle aging offers important insights for researchers such as Christopher Sundberg, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Using an integrative approach that combines cellular, molecular, and whole-body movement analysis, Sundberg studies why muscle strength declines faster than muscle mass with age, why everyday activities become more fatiguing, and which interventions may help preserve physical function.

Sundberg joined UW–Madison in fall 2025, with appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health and the Department of Kinesiology. His recruitment was part of UW–Madison’s RISE-THRIVE initiative, which supports research in immunology and healthspan science.

His work in integrative muscle physiology examines how skeletal muscle function arises from coordinated processes across biological systems. By linking measures such as strength, power, fatigue, and movement to muscle fiber properties, protein function, and energy metabolism, this approach addresses not only how muscles change with aging, but why those changes matter for daily function.

Advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, now allow detailed biological measurements to be directly connected to muscle performance in humans. In aging research, this integrative framework helps explain mobility loss, fatigue, and functional decline, as well as why individuals of the same age can experience very different physical abilities and aging trajectories.

Sundberg’s lab stands out for its human-centered, systems-level approach, studying real-world tasks and directly linking them to neuromuscular, cellular, and molecular mechanisms within the same individuals. By identifying the true drivers of muscle fatigue and functional decline, this work aims to inform targeted interventions that support healthier aging.
