Pitt Nursing and UCI researchers receive multi-million-dollar grant to study how patients react to Alzheimer's disease diagnoses.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a multi-million-dollar grant to the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, Irvine, to explore how patients respond to Alzheimer’s disease diagnoses.

The PARADE study (Patient And family member Reactions to biomarker-informed ADRD DiagnosEs; RF1AG080591), led by Dr. Jennifer Lingler of Pitt Nursing and Dr. Joshua Grill of UC Irvine, is set to receive up to $3.5 million over five years.

This collaborative project works alongside the New IDEAS study (funded by the American College of Radiology) and the Alzheimer’s Association’s TrialMatch Program. It aims to deepen understanding of patient and family experiences, particularly the psychological impacts of learning Alzheimer’s biomarker results.

The study notes that while biomarkers have been used since 2021 to identify appropriate treatments and provide clarity on cognitive symptoms, there is limited data on their emotional and social effects. Responses to such diagnoses vary—some individuals may feel relieved, while others may face lasting distress that requires clinical support.

Moreover, current research lacks diversity, largely reflecting participants who are highly educated, non-Hispanic White, and without prior mental health challenges. PARADE seeks to address this gap by enrolling 500 memory-impaired individuals and a family member from more representative backgrounds.

We are thrilled that Drs. Lingler and Grill received NIH funding for this vital research, said Dr. Gil Rabinovici of UCSF and lead investigator of the New IDEAS study. “This work will bring a much-needed focus to the patient and family perspective, adding significant value to the New IDEAS initiative.
