Northwestern scientists are reshaping how we think about the ovary

From platelet-rich plasma injections and longevity peptide therapies to influencers promoting herbal supplements for hot flashes and brain fog, information about menopause and so-called “anti-ovarian aging” is becoming increasingly common. While the growing attention to women’s health is encouraging, reproductive scientists caution that some of these claims may be poorly supported, misleading or focused on the wrong aspects of ovarian health.

Researchers emphasize that the ovary is much more than a storage site for eggs. It is a dynamic organ that produces hormones, interacts with multiple systems throughout the body and undergoes significant biological changes with age. Its influence may extend beyond reproduction, affecting women’s health long after fertility has ended.

Ovarian aging involves the gradual decline in egg quantity and quality, but its effects go beyond fertility. Changes in ovarian function can influence hormone production and may affect bone, cardiovascular, brain and metabolic health. Scientists are increasingly calling for a more integrated approach that connects reproductive health, menopause and healthy aging.

Research also suggests that aging affects the entire ovary, not just the eggs. Aging ovaries may accumulate scar-like fibrotic tissue and inflammation, potentially affecting ovarian function. Scientists are now developing noninvasive methods, including imaging techniques and potential blood-based biomarkers, to better measure these changes.

Researchers are also investigating biological pathways involved in ovarian aging, including mTOR and JAK-STAT signaling, to determine whether they could become targets for future therapies. The long-term goal is not simply to extend fertility or delay menopause, but to understand whether preserving ovarian function could contribute to healthier aging and improved health across the lifespan.

Despite growing interest in ovarian rejuvenation and longevity therapies, many proposed interventions remain unproven and require rigorous scientific evaluation. Nevertheless, advances in understanding ovarian biology may eventually transform approaches to fertility preservation, menopause, disease prevention and healthy aging.
