New research by University of Hawaiʻi finds connection between gut bacteria, biological aging
A new study from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine has strengthened evidence linking the gut microbiome to biological aging. Researchers found that gut microbial patterns were significantly associated with molecular markers of aging, regardless of a person's chronological age, suggesting that the microbiome may offer valuable insights into long-term health and longevity.
The study analyzed stool and blood samples from 123 adults, comparing gut bacteria with DunedinPACE, a next-generation biomarker that measures the rate of biological aging. Among the findings, Bifidobacterium adolescentis was associated with slower biological aging, while Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens was linked to a faster aging pace.
Because the gut microbiome is influenced by diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors, the findings highlight its potential role in precision medicine and healthy aging strategies. Researchers also suggest the microbiome may help explain how environmental and social factors shape long-term health outcomes.
While the study demonstrates a strong association between gut bacteria and biological aging, it does not establish a causal relationship. Further research is needed to determine whether altering the gut microbiome can slow aging or improve longevity.
