Amid trend in health optimization, Berkeley scientists focus on optimizing the brain

As interest in healthy longevity continues to grow, more individuals are embracing wearable technologies, biomarker testing, personalized nutrition, dietary supplements, and fitness programs to extend both lifespan and healthspan. While these approaches primarily target physical well-being, researchers are increasingly emphasizing that preserving brain health is equally critical for successful aging.

Building on more than three decades of neuroscience research, UC Berkeley neurologist Dr. Mark D'Esposito advocates a proactive approach to cognitive health. Rather than waiting for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease to develop, scientists are working to identify reliable ways to measure, monitor, and strengthen brain function throughout life, well before cognitive decline begins.

A major step in this effort is the BrainHealth Project, an extensive longitudinal research initiative designed to establish meaningful indicators of brain wellness. The project integrates cognitive assessments, lifestyle evaluations, emotional health measures, and advanced MRI imaging to develop the BrainHealth Index (BHI)—a comprehensive metric for evaluating overall cognitive performance. Participants receive ongoing assessments along with personalized, evidence-based strategies to enhance attention, reasoning, emotional resilience, and cognitive flexibility.

Early research suggests that individuals across all age groups can improve their BrainHealth Index, reinforcing the encouraging message that cognitive health is not fixed and can be strengthened through healthy habits and targeted interventions.

Sleep has also emerged as a cornerstone of brain health. At the Sleep Innovation Laboratories, researchers are using wearable technologies to monitor sleep duration, quality, consistency, and timing. By combining these data with brain health assessments, they aim to better understand how restorative sleep supports memory, learning, emotional well-being, and long-term cognitive resilience.

In parallel, scientists are exploring biological markers that can objectively reflect brain health. MRI studies have shown that stronger communication between distinct brain networks—referred to as brain modularity—is associated with improved attention, memory, multitasking, and responsiveness to cognitive training. Researchers are also investigating subtle anatomical structures, including tertiary sulci, which may serve as early indicators of cognitive resilience and healthy brain aging.

Although MRI remains a valuable research tool, the long-term goal is to develop accessible and affordable methods for monitoring brain health. Emerging wearable technologies capable of measuring physiological signals such as heart rate, respiration, and brain activity may eventually enable routine brain health assessments from home, making preventive brain care more widely available.

To accelerate progress, organizations such as the Society for Brain Health are bringing together neuroscientists, clinicians, technology innovators, educators, and policymakers to identify evidence-based strategies that promote lifelong cognitive well-being and translate scientific discoveries into practical public health solutions.

As preventive neurology continues to advance, brain health is increasingly recognized as a central pillar of healthy aging. By combining regular physical activity, restorative sleep, emotional well-being, cognitive engagement, and scientifically validated biomarkers, researchers are reshaping the future of longevity. Their vision is not only to extend life but also to preserve mental sharpness, resilience, independence, and quality of life throughout every stage of aging.
